Tension gripped Gobindpur village in the site of the Posco project in Jagatsinghpur district as the police forces entered the village for the first time and tightened the security to ensure continuation of the socio-economic survey for the project.

With the massive deployment of police forces, the district administration is geared up to start the survey at Gobindpur on Friday. It may be noted that the village is considered to be the stronghold of the Posco Pratirodh Snagram Samiti (PPSS), the organization spearheading the anti-Posco agitation.Meawhile, chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik has invited six political party leaders including left parties to discuss on Posco related issues on 11 June.

Armed police personnel entered Gobindpur and started search operations to nab the anti-Posco leaders including Abhya Sahoo. Police conducted patrolling at Nuagaon and Gobindpur and kept a strict vigil on the movement of PPSS activists to ensure law and order during survey.

The second round of talks between Orissa government and anti-Posco activists on Saturday failed to yield any result as both disagreed on the continuance of socio-economic survey being carried out at the villages of the proposed plant site near Paradip.

While Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS) leaders demanded immediate stop of survey as the exercise had sparked tension among the people, the government refused to accept it.

“There is no point in the talk when our people are being assaulted by the police at the proposed plant site villages in the name of survey work,” PPSS advisor Abani Boral, who leads the agitators in the talk, said.

The meeting between anti-Posco activists and the revenue divisional commissioner (RDC), central division, P.K. Mohapatra and other senior officials, was held here for the first time on May 29.

Jagatsinghpur MP Bibhuprasad Tarai (CPI) had played a vital role in bringing the agitating group to the discussion table.

“There has been no police excesses during the ongoing survey work,” Mr. Mohapatra said, adding that there was no point in stopping the survey work as the people were “supporting” the survey teams.
